About Som

This blog is dedicated to my Amma (Mum) who is my first guru and inspirer! She is widely known in our family and friends circle to be a very good cook who can whip up numerous yummy dishes within half an hour. She has not only taught me to cook tasty food, but also made it so interesting that I was tempted to try new cuisines from around the world!! Thank You Amma!!!

Cooking is one of my passions. As a child, I loved to hang around my Amma's (Mum's) or Ajji's (Grandma's) kitchen to observe everything as well as hear the gossip! I would even volunteer for small chores like cutting veggies, fetching water, grinding small amounts of masala, etc.

I do not remember the first dish I prepared all by myself, it must have been when I was around 10. During the learning process, there have been a couple of minor disasters with the things I made, but I learnt lessons that I never forgot, from each episode! I could never remember the actual amount of ingredients or order of preparation in a recipe, so I solved this problem by collecting recipes in a diary. After all these years, that book is in tatters, so I am transferring all those recipes into this blog. Most of the recipes are handed down to me from my Mum who in turn got it from her Mum and M-in-law. Once I got internet-savvy, I also collected recipes from various sites and blogs.
My family hails from Kasaragod (Kerala State, India) which belongs to the TuluNaadu. We are Tulu speaking Sthanika Brahmins and hence are strict vegetarians. I have started the blog with all  the recipes that we make at home and then follow it up with cuisines of  South Canara, Karnataka, South India, North India and from around the Globe!

Even though I love modern gadgets in my kitchen, I also adore the old-fashioned kitchen equipments like a stone grinder, wooden rice noodle maker, butter churn, etc. that my  ancestors have used for generations. My dream is to have a large farm-house style kitchen with all these marvels in it, where I can cook delicacies for my family as well as make home-made jams, chutneys, pickles, etc.

As my Ancestors were farmers, so obviously the 'growing your own' gene is in me. I love growing veggies in my greenhouse. One day I hope to have a big veggie patch and herb garden too!

I cannot finish this account of my culinary development without giving due thanks to my dear Hubby who has survived my kitchen experiments with a big smile on his face!  He is my serious food critic and admirer! I am also very proud of the fact that I have played a very small role in inspiring him to learn cooking. He is a very keen and promising student of mine :) I would not have reached where I am today without his constant support and encouragement!! Thank You Dear!!!
